Transportation
Cars
Rental cars are moderately priced and average $25/day in low season and $30/day in high season. There are many rental agencies around and typically have cars available, though during high season you’ll want to book in advance. This is a great way to get through your first few weeks on island while you get situated and look into buying a car if you desire.
Most spouses end up buying a car. It is the easiest way to get around on the island and gives you the freedom and flexibility you’ll want while your student is in school. An “island car” typically costs between $1200-4000 and are usually bought from other students, rental agencies, or local mechanics. Expect to have some rust, a few dings and scratches, and cosmetic issues. The main concern is that the engine runs well and there are no major mechanical problems. Also you are required to have insurance, typically through Nagico, which costs about $400/year but can be reduced by providing a clean driving record from your insurance company back home. You will also need to have the car inspected (every 2 years) and get new plates (every January).
Buses
There are “buses” available for your use, but don’t expect it to be the type of bus you’re thinking of. They are typically 15 passenger vans. Make sure the license plate says “BUS” to ensure it is legitimate and safe. The bus can cost anywhere from $2 to get from the school to the airport, up to $10 to get to Philipsburg. It is much harder to take the bus to the French side (mainly getting back is the problem). There is also no set schedule and it can be unreliable, however it is transportation.
Taxis
There are taxis on the island, however they can be very expensive. It is not recommended as a primary form of transportation. If you do need to use a taxi, for your safety please make sure the license plate says “taxi,” not just that they have the sign on the roof. There have been problems with illegitimate taxis in the past.
