Bringing Children
Each semester there are students that bring along their spouse and children. The island is a great experience for children, with all of the activities and beaches! The Spouses Organization also provides family friendly activities and seasonal activities just for children, such as halloween parties, Easter egg hunts and more. Usually the main questions regarding bringing children involve available options for school and pediatricians. Information on pediatricians can be found on our Medical page. Educational information is available below:
School for Children-
There are two private schools located on the island that cater to U.S. children ranging from pre-school to 12th grade. CIA is located within walking distance of AUC, and Learning Unlimited is located in Philipsburg, about a ½ hour driving distance from AUC. Both schools require private payment ranging from $500-$900 per month per child, depending on the grade level.
Many parents choose to home school their children while they are on the island. There are wonderful resources on the Internet for home schooling. There is also the option to check in your state of residence and find out if the state has an online public school option. If you are able to fly your child home to take the yearly state test, they may be able to be enrolled in school in your current state and do their work here on the island. A small sampling of online home school resources include:
Time4learning.com
ReadingEggs.com
Starfall.com
IXL.com
SpellingCity.com
TimezAttack.com
SuperTeacherWorksheets.com
Childcare-
There are a few local daycare centers on the Dutch side of the island, though most people from the states prefer to utilize willing spouses to babysit their children if needed. This would need to be worked out between the parents and the babysitter.
Activities for Kids-
There are many activities available on the island for kids. Please visit our Activities page for more information.
